Devereaux On the Go!
Hello! We are the Devereauxs, a family of four from Seattle, WA USA with parents Alec and Madeline and kids Mae (4.5) and Emmett (2). Madeline and myself both love to travel and want to give that same opportunity to our kids. Before our oldest kid, Mae, start’s Kindergarten in Fall 2026 we’ve decided to leave our jobs as Aerospace Engineers to take a gap year with the whole family.
This blog is our way of documenting that journey for our kids and our family and friends. Inspired by other family travel blogs, we also hope to pay it forward and share resources on at least what has worked for us!
Why are we Doing This?
- Spend More Time as a Family – As two working parents, our time together as a whole family was limited to a few hours a day during the week. Before our kids get older and prefer friends over their parents, we wanted to maximize our time spent with them.
- Exposure to Other Cultures – It’s easy to get comfortable in the suburbs of the USA. We want our kids to see other cultures through slow travel to non-touristy destinations and see the variety our planet has to offer. They are probably too young to remember the details, but the underlying adaptability and broader world perspective they will gain will last a lifetime. As parents, we similarly value learning new approaches and integrating them into our family life.
- Career Recharge – We’ve both worked extremely hard over the past 15 years (many +50 hour weeks) in our aerospace careers. While we are passionate about the field and intend to return, a chance to slow down for a bit sounds refreshing.
- Provide Toddler Travel Resources – We are both planners who love to make Spreadsheets, travel itineraries and over-research every decision. We want to share this with other families who want to travel with young children and what has worked for us.
- Meet New People – We are hoping to make life long friends along the way who show us the best kept secrets of their country and will some day visit us to return the favor!
